Introduction Howdy there, Internet People. I am known as “chicks” and I’m here today to talk about the Internet and community. Background First, a little of my story to set the stage. I started in the computer business before there was a web browser, but conveniently the Internet blew up at the right time for me and it has kept me employed or consulting steadily for 30 years. In my formative years the computer business had a variety of thriving magazines. You could read in Wired or ComputerWorld how tech companies were striving to maximize their number of users by building a community and taking advantage of network effects. ...
Repost of post by David Kenny from Nielsen: Today marks the 25th edition of The Gauge, an important industry snapshot of the total time U.S. viewers spend watching TV each month via broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. The Gauge is tracking, arguably, the most seismic shift in the history of television. In just 25 months, streaming has moved from representing 26% of total time spent with TV in the U.S. (cable was 39% and broadcast 25%) to today representing 37.7% of total time spent with TV in the U.S. (cable is now 30.6% and broadcast 20.8%). ...

I keep getting these emails from linked-in and I can’t help but wonder: why are you neglecting your website that much? Why is the app that much better? Is it really better? They don’t make it apparent how. Do they not care about people using the web version anymore? Does Microsoft really feel the primary audience is mobile and not people that sit in front of their computers all day? Why should we believe that linked-in is going to continue investing in the app when we’ve seen folks like StackOverflow create apps and then abandon them? ...
First, The Economist covers my new job in the first month. Now, we have Wired . covering this as well. That’s my two favorite magazines of all time. I’m not sure how the Smithsonian’s Air & Space or Make will get in on this, but either could be the hat trick!
Try Personal Capital If you are past the point where CreditKarma is giving you helpful information then it is time to move onto these guys. You get a complete view of your status across all of your accounts. It is great to search for transactions across banks and credit vendors. Their support has been excellent.

Once again the forces for copyright have reduced the rights of normal people who have done nothing wrong. Any chance of a lost nickle is too much for the copyright advocates. And they get to demand these rights for life+70 years. That’s no good for the public domain, but that’s an easy to ignore consequence if they can be $20 richer in the 145th year of publication. As China has amply demonstrated if you want to remain relevant to manufacturing you need a very different view of intellectual property. But don’t worry, for trading away making cars, washing machines, and almost everything else we got Hollywood and stock photo houses. Those are the best people to optimize our economy for it would seem. I’m sure Hollywood is excited to retrain coal and factory workers to be the next Dwayne The Rock Johnson. ...
