Glowing review of "Evolution of Lua, continued"

Introduction I really enjoyed reading The evolution of Lua, continued that I learned about thanks to this Hacker News thread. This is a great perspective on the long-term (15 year) evolution of the Lua programming language. While discussing language evolution is not completely unheard of, it is rather atypical of the discussion we usually have around programming languages. Most often you’re only concerned about the syntax or features of a particular language version, usually the latest one. Sometimes you might look at release notes to see when a feature was introduced or a bug was fixed. Our day to day needs don’t often benefit from a longer term perspective. ...

Canadian Petition That Games Must Remain Functional At EOL

Commentary on https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7194789351812214784/ by Logan Abbott. This seems very reasonable and I hope this idea catches on in other places. Other options that come to mind would be more onerous and less likely to be adhered to. Additional beneficial side effects of this will be for all network games to be more fault tolerant to network problems and for EOL considerations to get more thought and testing during development.

Steam preferences set to Linux

I wish I had known this earlier, but I finally set my default in my preferences to wanting Linux. It does’t seem to limit my ability to see Windows-only games in the store or discovery queues. See https://gaming.stackexchange.com/a/311702/100715 to learn how to set your preferences. Blizzard is not known for their foresight in working with the open source community. If it isn’t on their terms they will kill it. The bnetd project also took nothing from Blizzard, but it scared them and so they destroyed it. Links Private MMO servers – A grey area with potential Shared with: Public

On one hand, I can see his point: had he known it was going to be so much more work, he wouldnt’ have done it in the first place. But on the other hand, if you’re going to choose to support an additional platform… then support it all the way.I played Rust and it’s one of the few games where I thought, “nice open ended game!” but seriously, Linux does get the short end of things when it comes to GPU support, game engine support, and testing coverage.I would counter the whole 1% platform argument with this: you are trying to break into segments of the market. Just because you flipped the sign to “open” for Linux, doesn’t mean people will suddenly jump on board… especially since it costs real money and it’s a gamble. (Anyone remember Loki Games?) It’s the job of the platform/engine/developer to strike out and market to the people to pull in more users. This “well, they didn’t all come and jump on the band wagon, so why bother spending resources to test it” line of thinking is why it isn’t successful. arg Sorry, SO much frustration when it comes to Linux and gaming that goes back to the ’90s. Yeah, I bought Rust as well. It was seriously the only reason why I joined Steam. (Thank goodness for those Kickstarters that released their games on multiple platforms through Steam, otherwise, it would have been a complete waste). ...
